Reposted from @synthux.academy . Anyone who's into generative music knows the Turing Machine, by Music Thing Modular. A random looping sequencer that shaped the way we play with zeros and ones, creating melodies, modulation and cross-rhythms.

In this conversation, @tomwhitwell from Music Thing Modular shares the creative process behind the Turing Machine. He also discusses other modules like the Minidrive, which is designed around the Minimoog overdrive circuit and initially inspired by the legendary Grampian Spring Reverb overload.

New Befaco release today!

Morphader is a 4 channel CV controlled crossfader for audio and CV.

Morphader is a performative tool designed to make multichannel CV/Audio crossfade easy and comfortable. Fading from one quad CV/audio scene to another. The core of the module has four CV controlled crossfaders, each with their individual control and a master fader to control them all. The module mixes the four crossfades at its fourth output, thanks to a clever normalization scheme. Each of them can be easily removed from the mix by plugging a cable at its own output.

Kompas is a three-coordinate probabilistic pattern navigator. Each coordinate has a unique traveling pace and a dedicated trigger output. The amount of probability can be adjusted manually or by external voltages. Once a coordinate has been adjusted, a new pattern is generated and looped until the next change of direction.

this tool is the outcome of the environment we are in

and is inspired by the non-linear approach to music and life – don't build any expectations, choose your direction, and discover new paths

Unlike common probability operation, instead of filtering a pre-determined sequence, Kompas uses probability to generate new looping patterns based on the direction you choose.

The Wired Heart is perfect for the DIY curious, it comes in a constructed form that works straight out the box but with optional DIY add-ons that you might want to solder later.

The 6 optional extension sockets are included. This is an easy solder job, perfect for beginners.

WIRED HEART

Wired Heart features six sensors that can detect touch and humidity. Each of the sensors control the pitch of an oscillator – press harder or have sweaty hands to get a higher pitch. Each sensor serves a different function, and it is best to explore the Wired Heart Sound universe by trial and error. However if you want to know what is happening, you can find some explanation below.

Things start to get interesting when you touch several pads at once. The oscillators will begin to further cross modulate each other by the current flowing through your hands and a whole new world of awesome sounds opens up.

EXPERIMENT!

There are many more ways the heart can react to you: Try wiping it with a wet cloth, put a banana on it and see what happens, or simply blow on it – the humidity in your breath will make the oscillators sing as if you were just breathing new life into six punch-drunk sirens.

UPGRADE!

Each oscillator of the Wired Heart comes with an extension port to connect more electronics. The kit comes with three LEDs, three photoresistors and a potentiometer, all of which can be connected to the ports. By using the photoresistors, the oscillators will react to light. This can be your hand covering an existing light source, a flashlight you shine on the Heart or the light from one or more of the LEDs. The LEDs in turn blink with the rate of an oscillator. By just connecting a few components you can create a never-repeating, chaotic self driven sound source.
Potentiometers can be used to set an oscillator to a fixed pitch, or control them by hand with more precision.
