SMITH from Tesseract Modular is an 8 inputs & 8 outputs precision buffered matrix with presets. Available now as a kit from Thonk. Link in bio.

Each of the 8 outputs can take the signal from any of the 8 inputs, allowing over 16 million possible combinations. This is not a mixer, the same input can be routed to many outputs, but several inputs can’t be present at the same output simultaneously.

The module works with both audio and CV signals, ins & outs have ±10 volts range and minimum offset (1 millivolt approx.), which makes it perfect for distributing V/Oct signals too.

8 scenes can be accessed through the dedicated push buttons but also by CV and trigger.

8 banks (with 8 scenes each, 64 scenes per preset).

8 persistent presets (with 8 banks of 8 scenes each).

This module can be used to store ‘presets’ for your live setup, allowing patch changes and easy rerouting signals with literally just pressing a button.

Another (more chaotic) way to use it is to plug several modulation sources to the inputs (such as envelopes, LFOs, sequenced CVs…) and several modulation destinations to the outputs (filter cutoff, PWM, VCAs…). If you want to introduce a variation in the sound, select a different scene or directly randomise the current one to drastically change ‘what is modulating what’.

Using audio sources can lead us to interesting territories too, sequencing waveform changes or using different processors (filter, distortion, folder…). Keep in mind that the switch performs pretty fast and the signal is passed without any modification (to preserve its accuracy, which is pretty important when using the module for v/oct) so with audio, the switching may be “clicky” depending on the sound source.

I (Steve) will be wandering Superbooth on Thurs and Fri as a punter this year, come say hello and tell me what you've seen at the show.

Thonk and Music Thing Modular decided to take a year off presenting a booth this year, this would have been our 9th Superbooth. We're focussing instead on design, production and moving workspace in 2025 but we'll be back on the booths next year. Tom Whitwell is busy cooking up magic in the lab.

Sebsongs Rhythmatic is a fully featured analog dru

Sebsongs Rhythmatic is a fully featured analog drum machine with six voices from the classic Roland CR-78.

It has Bass Drum, Snare, Conga, Rim, Hats and Cymbal, expanding on the original with adjustable tune and decay controls.

A key feature of Rhythmatic is the big knob in the top centre. This knob and CV jack control a random parameter, adding or subtracting steps from the pre-programmed patterns. For a more busy pattern, turn clockwise, more sparse? turn it the other way! Use it live performance to add quick random fills on the fly. Holding the shift button turns the random knob into a 4 bar loop to record pattern changes and movement on the random knob. Modulate it with whatever you want via the random CV input.

Sequence externally or internally, with 64 programmable drum patterns. Program either using the buttons on the front panel, or via USB with the online pattern editor. Original CR-78 factory patterns are included and can be edited, stored, and switched live via CV. Each drum voice can have its own sequence length for experimental polymetric sequences. The factory patterns contain many of the original CR-78 patterns plus pattern banks created by Sebsongs Modular, Konstantine and Salkinitzor.

Each individual drum has a mute option with clear LED feedback for performance. Each drum has a configurable input/output for each of the voices which can be set as either: trigger inputs for external sequencers or as trigger outputs for controlling other gear from the built-in sequencer.

Rhythmatic features internal swing per pattern and has clock and reset inputs for syncing to external clock sources. There are two audio outputs: output A contains the full mix of all 6 voices, but inserting a patch cable to output B splits the voices in half between the two outputs. All in all Rhythmatic offers a fresh twist on the classic sounds and rhythms of the CR78, with programmability and live performance features that make it a unique addition to any rack.
