The Drum sequencer from @ericasynths and @moritzklein0 is the latest edition in the mki x es.edu DIY Eurorack range.

Most drum sequencers are complex machines – packed with buttons and LEDs, all driven by a microcontroller. For this DIY Drum Sequencer kit, MKi and Erica have decided to take the opposite approach: a hands-on rhythm engine with a minimalist interface, built from just a handful of logic chips.

Each of the sequencer’s four channels is programmed in real time using a single button. Patterns loop automatically, can be shortened on the fly, and support half-time playback for slower, evolving grooves. Accents are handled using synced LFOs, while a simple resistor-DAC turns patterns into stepped control voltages – perfect for modulating pitch, decay, or other parameters.

Whether you’re looking to learn about sequencer design, sharpen your soldering skills, or just want a drum sequencer that plays like an instrument, this DIY kit packs surprising depth into a refreshingly simple interface.

@ericasynths have pulled out all the stops and recreated an extended version of the legendary Elektor Formant synthesizer, a complete modular system that was originally released as a DIY kit by Elektor Magazine during the late 1970s.

Working in collaboration with Harald Antes of haraldswerk.de, Erica Synths have developed a modular system based on the original designs while also adding some new modules to take its functionality to the next level. The unique internal normalisation of the original system has been preserved, so the Formant system can also be played without patching, exactly as described in the original Elektor Formant manuals.

The Hakai Labs / Danesi Designs Colour Vision Deficiency (CVD LED) is a high quality custom designed bi-polar 3mm Red/Green LED that’s been manufactured for the inclusivity of colour vision deficient (CVD) individuals without any sacrifice to those without a colour vision deficiency.

A small colour shift was made to the wavelength of the green side of the LED to push it closer to blue in the visible spectrum. This slight shift is enough to enable colour vision deficient individuals to fully distinguish between the red and the custom green/teal colours emitted by this LED.

IMMUTABLE MARBLES from @cctvfm is a black panel full-sized clone of Mutable Instruments’ best-selling open source Random Sampler. In stock now at Thonk.

Much like the interplay of its metamorphic namesake, Marbles specialises in random responses to an initial impact. The module is organised as three sections: the t section generates and processes clocks and triggers, the X section generates and processes voltages, and the DEJA VU section imposes structure, in the form of repetition, upon all the events generated by the two other sections.

Though thoroughly concerned with chance, the UI leaves plenty of options for imposing some semblance of structure. Sync it with external clocks, manipulate the orientation of generated elements, or introduce external CV and gate sequences! No matter what source causes the initial impact, Marbles will respond with elegant randomness.

This kit has the SMD parts pre-assembled, leaving only the through-hole parts to solder. These boards are also PRE-CALIBRATED, meaning no fussy computer nonsense is needed, just build it and go.

At its core, Hive is a four-channel stereo mixer with CV-controlled panning per channel, but like any other Vostok module, Hive comes with several quirks that make it a handy module for every system.

Each channel can boost incoming signals to perfectly match the level of your different modules, as well as bring pro-line level devices, such as desktop synthesizers or drum machines, into your rack.

The panning works with a custom panning-law slope of -1.5dB attenuation at the center position, ensuring smooth balance transitions either manually or with CV.

Several modules can be chained together using the dedicated connectors located at the back, allowing the use of other Hive modules as channel expansions or submixes.

This module is a tribute to the pioneering work of Dutch musician and instrument maker Michel Waiswisz (1949 – 2008), who first invented the Cracklebox with Geert Hamelberg in the late 1960s.

The Cracklebox was a small, handheld device designed as a way to explore new sonic territories. It was one of the first electronic musical instruments to use circuit bending techniques in the creation of electronic music. It allowed musicians to manipulate and control electronic circuits in real-time, creating a wide range of unique and experimental sounds. Waiswisz used a circuit from a toy piano as the basis for the instrument, and then added a series of touch-sensitive pads that were connected to the circuit. When a player touched one of the pads, the circuit would be completed, producing a crackling sound.

The Cracklebox was probably the first commercially available portable self-powered alternative ‘keyboard’ analog electronic instrument with inbuilt loudspeaker. In the 1970s about 4000 Crackleboxes were built and sold by STEIM in Amsterdam. Nowadays many people refer to the The Cracklebox as the archetype of ‘glitch’ or ‘circuit bending’.

The Dark Harvestator is a psychogeographic DIY standalone noise synth from Isn’tses.

It is a standalone PCB-art synth circuit which can create a wide range of textural noise, tones and chaotic bleeps. Overall the sound is very noisy, harsh and brutal, evoking crackly wartime sounds, radio interference, the rage of the sea and the Bacillus Anthracis. It also can produce some more continuous drone or synth sounds depending how you play it.

The synth is inspired by the disturbing history of Gruinard Island, AKA Anthrax Island, in Scotland and the bio-warfare experiments that took place there at the end of WW2. Its name is based on the mysterious group ‘Dark Harvest’ who protested for the cleanup of Gruinard by leaving contaminated soil from the island outside government buildings.

Erica Synths present this very affordable lo-fi sample mangler based on the Raspberry Pi Pico!

The Pikocore is a lo-fi music mangler based on the Raspberry Pi, developed by Zack Scholl at Infinite Digits. There are eight buttons and four knobs that can be used to manipulate the loaded samples. The buttons can be used to jump between samples and re-trigger audio in real time, while the knobs can be used to switch and edit various parameters including: Probability, Time-stretch and Sequence recording/playback. Button mashing is encouraged!

The original version of Pikocore came in a miniature pocket calculator form factor, but Erica Synths wanted to make it more playable, so they reached out to Zack and developed this Pikocore XL version that has identical functionality, but comes with Erica Synths signature hands on user interface and a proper aluminium enclosure with DC power supply.

Infinite Digits Pikocore XL by Erica Synths is a full DIY kit that includes all components to build an instrument and put in in action straight away. The RP board in the kit is pre-programmed and ready to use.
